  • Do you think the media puts too much focus on physical beauty?

I do not think that the media puts too much focus on physical beauty.  People are not only attracted to physically beautiful people, but also want to be attractive themselves.  If this wasn’t the case, the fitness, cosmetics, clothing, and dieting industries wouldn’t be multi-billion dollar industries.  I believe that the focus on physical beauty by the media is a result of what viewers want to see.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but I wonder where did that desire for beauty come from in the first place? It's a classic case of which came first the chicken or the egg?

I think it's unfortunate how much time is spent in our daily lives conforming to a certain sense of style and beauty and anyone outside of society's mold is considered different. I just wonder where it all began. In previous eras a large woman would be recognized as wealthy because it showed her family could afford the finest foods and wealth was more important than "beauty." Not only that, but women used to stay out of the sun because fairness of skin was considered elegant and beautiful, now we have tanning salons. Fashion, style, and image are constantly evolving and I don't think you can deny that the media has an affect on that change. When you are trying to be "stylish" where do you get that idea of style? As individuals we are influenced by what we see and hear and that leads us to what we think is stylish. I'm not saying that I'm not a part of that. I'll be honest; I love fashion, but I also know that my idea of what looks good wasn't originally my own.
