I have reworked some daily restrictions that I have placed upon myself. They are as follows:
- No computer before noon
- 1 hr/day on the computer
- 1 hr/day watching television
- No television during breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- The computer stays off when it is not in use
- Remove the clock display in the car, bedroom, and computer.
I will now provide my reasons behind these several restrictions.
- No Computer before noon. I find that the mornings are the most pivotal point of the day. I have the most energy, and get more done in the mornings when I actually choose to do something valuable with my time than I find gets done in the afternoon or evening.
- 1 hour a day on the computer. What do I do on the computer that is relevant? Almost nothing. Checking e-mail, news, and blog updates do not take up much time. Sometimes I find I spend several hours or half a day vegged out in front of the computer when I could have been reading or working out, going for a walk, or learning something new.
- 1 hour a day watching television. While I do enjoy watching documentaries and do have shows I enjoy watching, one hour a day should be far more than enough time to fit everything I could want in. I even use DVR, which is similar to TIVO, so all that I wish to watch is recorded and saved. Therefore an hour show becomes 45 minutes since I fast forward through commercials and I can watch the shows whenever I choose.
- No television during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I used to think I was killing two birds with one stone. I wasn’t. If I’m focusing on the television, I hardly notice that I have finished my meal. I would rather enjoy the meal and have some quiet time than go brain dead in front of the television. I also find that eating a meal doesn’t take long. So if I decide to have for example lunch in front of the television, my ten minute meal now lasts almost an hour, my energy drops to almost nothing, and I become more indolent as every minute passes by.
- The computer stays off when not in use. If it is on then I’m more inclined to go on it for no other reason than it is easy. I’m better off doing something better with my time. It is also a deterrent if I have to wait for the computer to boot up.
- Remove the clock display in the car, bedroom, and computer. I find I look at the time way too much. It becomes stressful. I’m not even good with doing things on time, but I look at the clock who knows how many times in an hour. I’d rather have no idea at what the time is and rather just enjoy the moment, let it last as long as it wants to and actually live life. For important scheduled appointments, etc. I plan to have a watch on with the display off set to beep twenty minutes before I have to leave.
